Getting the SIM to active status? Oct 06, 2016 12:00 PM

Has anyone successfully achieved active status for your SIM?

I'm working on a mac and have tried to follow the various instructions from the all the quickstart guides and startup documentation (the one in box, the one from AVnet, the online instructions and a pdf version from a hackathon that was sent to me via email from a support request) and haven't quite reached success.

- I've updated my ICCID in the jasper portal

- accessed the bootloader on the freescale board, then added the binary file to the board to upgrade the mbed interface from this page: https://developer.mbed.org/handbook/Firmware-FRDM-K64F

- then added the att quickstart binary (I presume this is the default cellular app)

- I can monitor the serial port and see that it is trying to initialize the modem but it always fails after 60 seconds

- using the connection test wizard in the jasper portal indicates the SIM permits passing traffic but fails when attempting to test the configuration (likely because the modem doesn't initialize)

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot or steps followed for success?

I'm having the same issue.

When I run the Jasper diagnostics, suggestion is that APN could be the problem. But I don't know if that's something that we can access in the Avnet board.

The APN was set for me in the cisco jasper interface. If you login to the simcontroller.wireless.att.com site. Select "devices", then select the ICCID of the SIM you're using in the table presented, then select the spotlight tab - when this view presents the SIM info the APN address is listed there.

As far as I can tell however that field is not editable. So the troubleshooting step would be helpful if it provided instructions for how to set it.

Are you able to see the activity over your serial port (aka USB port) after you've run the att quickstart binary? Do you see the modem attempt to initialize but fail?

I can also see the APN in jasper - m2m.com.attz

But the device must have this also. I thought it might be configured in the Avnet board, but I have now looked through the quickstart mbed source and found that it's in the mbed program (in config_me.h). It appears to be set correctly, so that's not the problem.

I can see activity via USB-serial, also seeing output that says modem initialization has failed.

Anybody from ATT&T reading this? Would be nice to get some help. I tried a support ticket, but no contact yet, also can't even see if a ticket has been created.

The live chat on the starterkit.att.com web site usually gets a better response, though this may involve Cisco or just sending you a new SIM.

Just making sure: you did change the status from "Test Ready" to "Activated" in the starterkit.att.com/app/sim-cards interface?

You'll also want to make sure that the modem is properly powered and you may need to use the diveristy antenna in addition to the primary one.

Let me know.

The first thing to make sure is to use the power supply that came with the IoT Starter Kit to power the cellular shield.
The included power supply provides 2.4A but typical USB power supplies only provide 1.0A.
Insufficient current will cause unstable RF performance from the module.
And make sure it is connected to the port marked 5V/DC on the shield.

Also, can you verify that the cellular shield firmware is running at the latest rev (0226)?
