Failed to get your device info error on iOS device

I am using an iPhone 6s running iOS 11.2 and am trying to get the data collector to work. However each time I click on "Start" in the "Start Collector" prompt, I get the following error message.
"Is your device unlocked and turned on? we failed to get your device info."
I have looked around online but haven't been able to find much to troubleshoot this.
I got the same error message running the data collector on an iPhone 5 running iOS 10 also. Both devices are developer enabled.
Also as I am not interested in the HD Video feature, I didn't put in the provisioning profile or certificate information in the preferences section (which I assume is optional since I didn't see any indication that it was mandatory).
Please let me know how I can troubleshoot this further. Is there any way I can access logs to see what is going on inside the mac client (version 1.4.0 build #1)?
