WIPJam at MWC – A Recap Starring ARO!
Mobile World Congress is always one of the best mobile industry events in the world and it’s exciting that it is becoming more of a destination for developers. This year, AT&T was really pleased that our AT&T Application Resource Optimizer (ARO) won a Global Mobile Award announced at MWC for the Smartphone Application Challenge. These awards are always competitive so this is quite an honor.
- For those devs who do not know about ARO, it is a free (and open source) tool to make applications more efficient—to reduce battery drain and network bandwidth usage. Both of these issues impact our customers, so we have been very pleased with the large numbers of downloads and wide usage.
ARO was also showcased at our booth at WIPJam, one of my favorite events at MWC. WIP specializes in mobile developer events and always supports us at our AT&T Developer Summit. This year’s WIPJam was the biggest yet (I understand they had 4000 registrants but the venue could only hold about 1000). We held a contest at our booth for the most efficient application. The participating apps were already in an application store and ARO was used to test how efficient they were. The top prize for the most efficient app was an iPad Mini!
The winner was an application called Eventtus. It is a really cool social app that lets you find events, share memories from them with friends, and connect with people. The app was out of Egypt which is an emerging market for mobile apps so network usage is a big concern and development of an efficient app would be a crucial part of an app’s success. Eventtus co-founders Mai Medhat and Nihal Fares were very excited that their app tested so well and won the prize.
