Why Not To Do a Startup – Dave McClure
I recently came across an older video of Dave McClure, founder of 500 Startups, who spoke at StartupDay 2010. He talks about a number of reasons as to why not to get into a startup. Perhaps the most striking reason that he lists was at the beginning of his talk where he points to the need to have passion to see a startup through to the exit.
Dave goes on to list a number of other reasons such as not talking to customers, family, not having a prototype, having a cushy job at a Fortune 500, interest in maxing out multiple credit cards and/or taking out a second mortgage to finance your company.
Dave’s talk also goes on to make a number of references to the concepts of lean startups as defined by Eric Ries, knowing your competitors, and the ability to describe the problem you are solving.
In short, carve out 30 minutes of your day to watch the talk!
