Voice Input – Duration / Length
Shorter utterances are generally preferred to longer ones. Longer utterances take more time and resources to process. For this reason, the length or duration of voice input your application accepts will have an impact on the perceived responsiveness of your application.
Here is what that means from an interface perspective:
- Your audio files cannot be longer than 4 minutes in length. You should include a mechanism to let the user of your app know when this time is about to expire.
- Provide feedback indicating the speech information is being processed. Keep in mind that a 4 min audio file will have some delay to the end user waiting for the dictation to come back and for the application to the process that amount of input from the dictation.
Unless long passages are a key aspect of your application, you may wish to limit utterances to shorter time periods. Shorter passages reduce processing time and improve the perception of how fast your application performs.
