THE RISE OF THE MOBILE WEB
Mobile has always been an exciting world to work in, but this year has been something special. It’s really the first time that developers, designers – and consumers – have finally started to see and realize the promise of a rich mobile web.
One reason for this is the ever-increasing popularity of touch-screen smart phones, most of which sport powerful, standards-compliant browsers. Competition between rival platforms has re-ignited a new round of web browser wars – but this time, it is the mobile versions of the browsers that are leading the charge.
Another attraction, for developers, is the lure of being able to write services and applications (with web technologies, rather than native code) that can be easily ported between platforms and openly distributed. Rather than having to learn new languages, we can use markup, styling and interactivity standards that we’ve used on the regular web for years.
