Strong Showing at Malaysia Developers’ Day 2014
The 2014 Malaysia Developers’ Day – ASEAN Edition concluded on September 19th with three winning teams presenting their hackathon projects to delegates at the KL Converge! digital media conference Gala Dinner with one lucky team walking away with the US$10,000 grand prize and a six-month mentorship by Golden Gate Ventures. 12 AT&T-Udacity nanodegree scholarships were also given to selected participants at the event to help the developers in their never ending quest for knowledge.
We were pleased to attract more than 120 innovators and entrepreneurs from Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, India and other Asia nations to our 24-hour mobile app development challenge this year. Only the second such event to be held in the region, it followed Malaysia Developers’ Day 2013, where 110 participants joined the event.
Thanks must go to our expert mentors and the other volunteers who supported the teams in Kuala Lumpur, and to our partner the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). AT&T and MCMC collaborated on last year’s event as well, extending it this year to invite participants from across Asia and to coincide with MCMC’s inaugural KL Converge! conference, which aims to establish Malaysia as the leading regional digital media and communications hub.
2014 Malaysia Developers’ Day – ASEAN Edition was an intense, high-pressure competition and all our teams are to be congratulated for their creativity and focus and also for the camaraderie that was evident throughout.
The event fostered some great ideas, with 21 teams ready to pitch exciting new apps by the afternoon of September 18, 2014. All the teams were fired up to create an app to improve community involvement or life in the smart city. It was a pleasure to see people with the ability and drive to make a real difference in the world coming together and receiving technologies, tools and advice to bring their dreams to life.
The overall winner of 2014 Malaysia Developers’ Day – ASEAN Edition was:
- Team Hacktivist for “Enact”
The winning app is a charity app connecting corporate sponsorship with a consumer’s favorite charity. It was inspired by the popular ALS ice bucket challenge.
The category winners of 2014 Malaysia Developers’ Day – ASEAN Edition were:

This all bodes well for the future of the app industry in Asia!
