Mobile Augmented Reality: Reality or Fiction?
So… I recently decided to research what was going on in the mobile augmented reality space by searching through youtube.com for the keywords “augmented reality” and the videos that came up were simply mind boggling.
The sheer number of augmented reality software titles was astounding: from board games to magazines/books to shirts and facial overlays! Simply for games alone, augmented reality could spawn whole new partnerships as well as new interactivity models.
Personally, I could see mobile augmented reality meaningfully change the way we interact with simple objects in our daily lives, but hey, my opinion isn’t the important one here. Check out the youtube links to different takes on mobile augmented reality software and post back with your thoughts at the end of this article!
Games and Board Games
- PIT Strategy – Augmented Reality Board Game – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGsfDDxhFN0
- Soccer Game – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAdeAnO7pKk
- Augmented Reality Shooter Game – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNu4CluFOcw
- Augmented Reality T-shirt – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIof7yEsOn8&NR=1
These three games turn ordinary paper into an amazingly intricate and potentially different game every time you play, thus making the games interesting and unique every time. You can imagine that classic games like “Dungeons and Dragons” could be sped up with automated rules and spiced up with fireballs raining from the heavens and lightening bolts being cast from wizards staffs.
Books and Magazines
- Esquire’s Augmented Reality Issue: A Tour – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGwHQwgBzSI&NR=1
- Book Augmented Reality by Hitlab – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKw_Mp5YkaE
Ever wish your books would come to life and you could interact with them? Or perhaps you could control the way the story was told? Now you can with augmented reality books! Even more exciting, your magazines could be live interactive ads that pull up an actual person who guides you through a color selection and that results in you purchasing the item on the spot.
- T-shirt Fitting Room – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWyK5El_eMs
- Fashionista – The New Webcam Social Shopper – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnBcqV9POkY
With clothes fitting a persistent issue, now you can see how different colors of clothes will look on you without having to step into a changing room! Even more interestingly, there is a multitude of shopping applications that businesses could use to create a much more interactive and entertaining shopping experience.
Where To From Here?
So now that you’ve seen a number of different augmented reality applications, what do you think about this technology?
Do you find it interesting and does it spawn ideas in your head about possible applications or startups that you could create to leverage this new technology? Could you see this technology enhancing your daily life somehow? Or do you think this is a fad that will soon pass?
