Integrating Banner Ads into Your App
This is the second in a series of blogs discussing best practices with AT&T Advertising API. Our first post, Getting Started with In-App Advertising, reviewed the basics of mobile advertising and how the AT&T Advertising API provides a simple approach to using in-app ads. This post will address the delicate balance between monetizing your app while not discouraging your users.
Make the Advertising Experience Part of the App Experience
The goal for integrating banner ads is to make them part of the overall user experience. You want to motiviate users to click on ads that interest them without being disruptive to the app experience. Plopping a banner ad at the top of your app doesn’t mean you now have an instant revenue stream. Users get discouraged easily by intrusive ads in their experiences, and are quick to abandon an app where ads interfere with usage or task completion.
Design and Planning
Plan the ad space within the user interface as an integral part of the app. An ad that just ‘sits’ on top of your app, covering up information or hiding controls will quickly become an annoyance. A developer who thinks they can make advertising revenue by generating ‘accidental clicks’ will again wind up irritating their user. You won’t make money on ads in an app that has been abandoned!
If your app has multiple pages, you may not want to display an ad on every page. To gauge whether or not an ad is distracting the user from the experience ask yourself, “Am I drawing interest in the ad or pushing interest away from my app?” Plan to display ads where they will be noticed, without interfering with the user’s need to complete an important action.
Interacting with an Ad Can Be a Positive User Experience
You can reward a user for viewing and clicking on an ad. One example would be a game app where you place an ad in a transitional page between game levels. “Click and view this ad and access a ‘secret’ bonus game level” You now have the user’s attention during ad interaction and you’ve made the ad an integral part of your app.
Making the decision to incorporate ads during the design phase of your app will allow you to make that ad part of the app experience. Decide where and when to display ads in your app to ensure the ad does not interfere with the use of your app. Rewarding your users for viewing and interacting with ads can lead to a positive experience for the user. Balancing the integration of ads in your app can provide both value to your users and maximize your revenue opportunity. Ad impressions + happy app users = your best revenue opportunity for in-app ads. And, as always, be sure you always comply with any laws, rules, and regulations regarding advertising.
