Gingerbread Android & A Podcast on Android
Everyone was very excited to see the Gingerbread Android version 2.3 release a few days ago. “It’s like an early Christmas present,” said Motorola Technology Evangelist Peter van der Linden, “only it comes on a T5 pipe, not a sleigh drawn by magic reindeer.”
Gingerbread introduces support for lots of new things, including NFC (Near Field Communication – this is a short range wireless technology that developed out of RFID). NFC makes all sorts of new applications possible – things like using your phone as a wallet, or a ticket, or an employee badge. Gingerbread also brings system-wide copy and
paste, gyroscope support, and enables extra-large screen sizes (WXGA and larger) and extra high resolution.
If you use the commandline tools much, like “adb”, be aware that Gingerbread requires an SDK tools upgrade, and when this has completed, some tools, including “adb” have moved into a different folder, so you will need to update your $PATH environment variable.
A small price to pay for a great new release!
