Just found an excellent video that gives good insight into the power behind Facebook and why companies/startups look to social media to drive new business.
An excellent excerpt comes at 1:04: “We had good traction on the web, but the hardest problem was customer acquisition. It was really hard to find new users on the web. I remember when the Facebook platform first came out and I looked at it and said “wow, this unlocks the distribution key.” The hardest thing was “how do I get people to put my URL into their browser or bookmark my site or launch my desktop app…” and Facebook solved that problem.”
