Whether you’re interested in checking out the latest in connected car technologies from a number of automakers and startups, viewing hands-on demos from smart home technology providers, or learning about how IoT platforms and technologies are enhancing our lives – you’re sure to find something of interest at Shape | AT&T Tech Expo. In this blog, we delve into a few of the interesting IoT demos and talks so you can better plan your Shape experience.

IoT Demo Deep Dive: Nokia Networks – Reliable and Ubiquitous IoT Coverage

At AT&T’s upcoming Shape event in July, Nokia will be showing a live demonstration of enhanced Machine Type Communication (eMTC, standardized in 3GPP Rel.13). For the demonstration, Nokia has implemented a software upgrade of its LTE base station to connect a Cat.M1 device (provided by Prisma Telecom), which reads and transmits sensor data.

In the showcase, a camera and a spectrometer (provided by Texas Instruments) provide information about the sugar content of grapes to determine their ripeness. Transmitting this information from sensors located in vineyards depends on reliable IoT connectivity that reaches remote locations with medium data rates at acceptable costs. And that’s exactly why eMTC Cat.M1 devices are such a perfect fit.

AT&T will be able to leverage the reliability and coverage of its existing 4G LTE network and spectrum and extend the 4G LTE network coverage by up to 15dB. At the same time Cat.M1 devices allow plug-in-and-leave-alone operation, as they can run for 10 years without battery replacement. These devices will become available at an attractive price, as Cat.M1 device complexity is only 20 percent that of a conventional LTE device.

IoT Community.png

In addition to this IoT demo, Nokia will be showcasing the IoT Community of the ng Connect Program. Launched recently at Mobile World Congress 2016, the program brings innovative companies together to collaborate on solution concepts, end-to-end prototypes, business models, and market trials that will unleash the full potential of the Internet of Things. The Program has over 250 members that span a wide range of industries, including innovators in infrastructure, devices, applications, content, and vertical markets. You’ll get a sneak peak of how the program is bringing IoT to life through various market trials around the world, and learn about how your company can get involved.

You can find Nokia Networks exhibits on the Promenade level of AT&T Park on both Friday and Saturday, July 15-16.

IoT Tech Talk: Texas Instruments

Texas Instruments.pngOn Friday, July 15, Texas Instruments (TI) will deliver a tech talk on Prototyping to Production for IoT. Adrian Fernandez, Microcontroller Development Experience Manager at TI, will walk you through design decisions and considerations for hardware, software, and cloud infrastructure when developing an IoT product.

Creating a prototype that can scale to a production device is challenging, and it requires a solid ecosystem of tools and partner vendors to decrease time to market and manufacturing delays. Adrian will discuss how to rapidly prototype a wireless system, explore options that are available for a scalable cloud infrastructure, and then discuss strategies on iterating on the prototype and moving to manufacturing.

For developers interested in leveraging the TI LaunchPad development kit for a Shape Hackathon project or future products, this tech talk is for you.
