AT&T Mobile App Hackathon – Seattle
Mobile App Hackathon. Good food, great developers, lots of technical help and enough brain power in the room to make any app you can dream up. That pretty much sums up the hackathon this last Saturday on April 16th. With the help of Apigee and F5 Networks, the hackathon was executed smoothly and developers loved the event. I have to say THANKS to F5 Networks for graciously providing the facilities and Apigee for assisting with the planning and execution of the Hackathon.
The hackathon ran from 9AM to 8PM with lightening talks and an integrated lunch time. As Shanley from Apigee and I promoted the event in the weeks prior, we could tell that the momemtum was building into a frenzy. By 9:40AM, the day of the event, we had a packed room over 160+ attendees and spectators, eager to get on with team formation, networking and coding.
When we had initially dreamed up the hackathon, we had one goal in mind: provide the resources necessary for anyone to create a mobile app. So we brought in the senior developers from the various HTML5 cross platform solutions to help out. Red Foundry, Nitobi, Titanium, Amazon and Sencha showed up, developers in and and swag ready. Also, we figured that if we added a little RedBull, it might help the apps grow a bit faster or at least give them wings.
At the end of the day there were 16 mobile apps submitted and there was event a powerpoint presentation of various mobile gaming development platforms that was presented. Perhaps most impressive was that a number of the apps had parts of the implementation hosted in the cloud and there was even an app that used Node.JS! When I heard the phrase “I used Node.JS,” I practially fell out of my seat. Why? Because Node.JS is bleeding edge technology and still pre-alpha, so it was neat to see someone use Node.JS for a mobile app.
