AT&T Mobile App Hackathon – Redwood City – Connected Car
We just wrapped up a Connected Car Hackathon at NestGSV in Redwood City, CA and the discussions and ideas touched on multiple aspects of the automotive industry. Hertz, Mojio, Spark, GraceNote, TowerSec, Nvidia and AT&T were all sponsors of the hackathon, which was also happened to be replicated in Ann Arbor, Michigan and pulled in a total of 211+ attendees across both locations. Make sure to check out Facebook for pictures from the event.
To enable social connectivity across both locations, NestGSV setup multiple webcams that streamed video between both locations that anyone could join and interact. NestGSV also setup a panel session that was held across both locations and included the CTO of Hertz, who weighed in on where Hertz was headed with in-vehicle technology and where the opportunity lies for developers. A video of the panel session will be posted shortly. In the meantime, check out a quick social recap of the event from NestGSV – https://storify.com/otisrtaylorjr/connected-vehicle-hackathon?utm_campaign=&awesm=sfy.co_hfhs&utm_medium=sfy.co-twitter&utm_source=t.co&utm_content=storify-pingback.
As for the apps, there were a number of interesting ideas that were pitched and one of them focused on easing the pain of finding a mechanic when your car throws an error. Like meaningless API error codes (which we all should be familiar with), car error codes can be just as cryptic. Team CarDoctor solves the pain of personally contacting dozens of mechanics by automatically pushing your vehicle information and the error code to multiple mechanics who bid on your job.
Perhaps one of the coolest ideas presented was Team HyperLapse who presented a 3D Google Earth visualization of drive data from a Mojio OBDII plugin. In a nutshell, Google Earth followed behind or flew behind the nav points so that an observer could see exactly where the car has been.
