AT&T Mobile App Hackathon – Palo Alto – Social Good
Insanity is my only descriptor for the the social good focused hackathon we had this weekend in Palo Alto. All told, 151+ developers and students turned out to crank out mobile apps and they formed a whopping 29 teams! Even with a couple of teams that dropped out of presenting at the last minute, it still took over 3 hours to finish all of the presentations. So we really have to thank the guest judges for taking the time to assist. An additional big thanks goes out to the EA folks out here in the bay area for setting up the connections as well as to Mary Jean and Karla for pulling together the student focused portion of the hackathon.
We also had a blast with our new new NeuroSky Necromimi Brainwave Cat Ears! We heard that there is a bluetooth version where you can download your EEG data and possibly even use the unit to play games. Here is a quick shot of them in action:
For those of you new to “hackathons,” these style of events are an excellent way to learn about new technologies as well as meet senior developers that can help attendees learn faster and possibly even meet future co-founders. To iterate on hackathons for this go around, we brought in our Full Circle Fund partners to pitch non-profit app needs as well as bringing high school kids to pair developers up with real world mobile app needs.
There was a lot of excellent development that occured over the weekend and here are the teams in no particular order:
Grade Support – 1st Place Teen Summit & 2nd Place Tiggzi – Grade Support is a revolutionary app that is designed to aid a student to track his/her grades and ways to improve them. The students can tell what their grades are currently, what their grades will be after a specific assignment, and can use a universal search bar that searches the best websites for a particular subject to guide the student in the right path. They are able to contact tutors/mentors or teachers with a text message if they need more help. They have a graph of their current grades, and can see their current and future assignments, and can complete them. The student is essentially supported to have a better grade at school, and to learn more.

It’s as simple as texting a mobile phone number, having the customer answer the phone, repeat their wonderful outburst of joy, and then hang up. Vostimonial then processes the call and gives the user more options to further distribute the message. Benefits for merchants: More positive feedback stimulates more reviews on sites like Yelp. Enough reviews makes you a market leader and allows you to charge premium pricing. Direct access to customers through cell phone numbers. This is crucial for businesses that currently rely on walk-in traffic. Wow factor for their customers. This system is very impressive when the merchants use it. However, after he told me about it; I came up with this idea for solving this problem by the use of mobile app that can warns alarms you before any hole on the street. Also, the app helps at making the people interacting with this problem by lots of features like: dropping pins at holes coordinates, choosing the severity of each hole, imaging the holes and other can see it and comment on it, having a list of top holes “most sever”, sorting the holes chronologically, and much more. However, this can help also the concerned governmental offices to use the app so that they can fix the holes more severing.
