AT&T Aspire Mobile App Hackathon – Boulder/Longmont
The AT&T Developer Program hosted its first hackathon in partnership with a school district at Altona Middle School, part of the St. Vrain Valley Schoold District, in Longmont, CO. We had 100+ attendees come through with over 60+ students participating from around the state. Student participants ran the spectrum from those getting their first taste of code to some that had already published apps. Whether they were a beginner or novice, they all received valuable instructions and tips from expert engineers working at IBM, Seagate, Apigee, and Sphero. By the end of the weekend the mix of students and developers were able to turn out 14 mobile apps!
We had some really great student teams at this event including both HomeworkSnap and School Planner whom finished within the top 3. Both teams built education focused productivity apps in the hopes that by making things easier for students we would see better outcomes.
One of the coolest apps that was built during the event was definitely crash course, which took advantage of many different features of Sphero in order to create an obstacle course game. The team also had to spent a lot of time reengineer both their application and concept as they learned from each test and made adjustments to troubleshoot issues such as battery comsumption.
A list of the prizes can be found here. As for the top winners, here they are:

Here is a quick list of all the teams that presented:
Round Table – The intention is to bring a new layer of depth to presentations. In this digital age of collaboration-the traditional means are no longer sufficient. Round Table offers both the workplace and the classroom a new way to interact and learn.
SpheroWeb – This application does a couple of things. The first is that you can set the color of the sphero by choosing from a drop down list. The second feature is you can upload a WAV audio file that has the audio “I like ______” where _______ is one or more colors and the application will send this WAV file off to the AT&T API to get transcoded. When the Rails application gets the text back, it searches for colors it knows about and sets the Sphero colors in order. The third feature I added was a morse code generator. You simply enter a string via the website, such as “SOS” and the application sends that text via morse code to the Sphero.
Show Your Work – Students should be proud of the work they do. This app helps them collect, share and reflect on what they do that was worth doing.
School Planner – Stay Organized! Get Better Grades! School Planner is Your App to Stay on Top!
Connect Erie – Connect Erie, is the starting platform for the everyday student App!
Connect Erie begins with giving students the essential links and resources they need in the education environment and is geared toward creating an online community that focuses on virtual campus help. This is step one in that process. Utilizing online resources gives any person with app access the ability to connect to the Erie High community.
Education made simple.
OnTime – The future – its very important. We are quickly advancing technologically more and more each day. Our schools aren’t teaching them the skills and education needed to have a successful job. Additionally, people need help storing information in a safe place, and the internet is one of the safest in the world. Introducing OnTime, a student’s best friend. Mark down assignments that will be due, arrange and organize a schedule, and use it as a source to help you with Homework. With just a few taps of a button, you can easily mark down when your homework is due, what you need to complete, and for what class its for. Then, you can use it to help complete your homework, with the app providing links to very well known sources such as History.com, to trusted websites for mathematics. This app is for middle school to college level kids, and even keep track of your child’s homework if you are a parent. This is the future of homework, the future of technology, the OnTime application, available for iOS.
ColorTrans – Our mobile application, ColorTrans, enables color-blind people to upload images and distinguish between colors that they normally would be unable to see correctly.
Dude Where’s My Class – Dude, Where’s My Class — pulls a schedule of classes from Infinite Campus and displays them on a map of Silver Creek High School. (Infinite Campus is the cloud system used by the St Vrain Valley School District to keep track of student schedules, grades, and attendance, and communicate with students and parents). One reason for the app is that many incoming freshmen don’t know their way around the school. A printed schedule or the text schedule on Infinite Campus isn’t helpful for them because they don’t know where room numbers like C105 or D202 are. The other reason for the app is to show that it is possible to “scrape” any of the data from Infinite Campus and put it into an iPhone or iPad app. The school district isn’t forced to wait for Infinite Campus to make changes if their are custom solutions that they need.
Crash Course – This app provides a fun way to play with the Sphero with friends and family in a way that people can go through obstacle courses and competing with others to see who can get through the game without hitting the obstacles.
HomeworkSnap – It’s a fast and easy way to get all your assignments recorded and ready to go for later within the time constraints of a busy school day
Sphero Kick It – The “Kick it” Sphero application is a multiplayer soccer game. It has the potential to create almost any multi-player game, WITH OUT a server. Essentially, when using Kick it, all of the players’ Sphero’s will know the playing field, and it will be exactly the same for every player. That being said, even though Kick it is a soccer game, it can be easily changed into practically anything. This is a concept than Sphero hasn’t even accomplished making it a entirely new idea. The application includes light notification, and even a victory dance when the Sphero goes through the goal area.
D&D Character Manager – An easy user interface to input character info and manage a character sheet
Polar MPG – Concerns about global climate change prompted us to come up with a contest to encourage everyone to reduce their carbon emissions. We have people enter car and trip data to receive their CO2 output and then compare that to celebrities.
TimeKeeper – it will help you avoid being tardy and getting to first period on time
