ARO 4.0 Simplifies Success … No Rooting Required
Written by Tiffany Kinkade
After three years of requiring rooting, the AT&T ARO team has made Mobile App Optimization easier with the launch of Application Resource Optimizer 4.0. No more rooting means the Android collector can capture traces on more devices with less set up time – essentially Plug N’ Play. The new non-rooted collector along with our recently released native iOS collector make 2015 the year to bring ARO into your tool set.
Recently our team traveled to Las Vegas to the AT&T Developers Summit, where we were able to talk to many developers that have tried ARO over the last few years. We heard repeatedly that they want to use ARO, but that rooting each device took too much time. Well, fret no more, ARO NO LONGER REQUIRES ROOT. Developers were literally jumping up and down when we told them.
Being able to collect traces without root access has been a goal for ARO since it was a prototype. We knew we could reach more developers, more testers, and more applications if we could remove the rooting barriers.
ARO is still able to collect the network data, provide the easy to read Best Practice results and display nearly all the same results throughout the tool. Users will still need to download the Android SDK, download the drivers for their device, and set up their ADB path in the ARO Analyzer, but once that is done users can tether their device to their laptop and run a trace from the Data Collector menu. There is no separate apk to install on Android devices.
Without using root, we have lost some filtering of the data. So we ask all users to run as clean a trace as possible. It’s imperative that users kill all other tasks that may be running prior to starting the trace, as we are no longer able to easily filter the traffic after the fact. However, if your team does require further deep analysis of the traffic and needs the rooted version of the tool, the apk is still available on our website and works with the same analyzer.
Our iOS collector is also available for download and works similar to our Android version. Just download the OS X analyzer and setup Xcode to recognize your device, then tether your device and run a trace from the Data Collector menu in ARO.
The new ARO 4.0 is still available completely free for download on our site. ARO has never been so easy to use, 2015 is definitely the year to bring ARO into your tool set.
