App Quality Alliance – Join the quality initiative!
Any developer concerned with the quality of their application should become a member of App Quality Alliance (AQuA) and use the resources available to improve his or her application. AQuA is the mobile industry’s non-profit organization supporting quality mobile application development and has recently expanded its membership base to open the doors to developers, test houses, and anyone who is part of the mobile application ecosystem.
In today’s rapidly changing world a developer ends up wearing many hats. Knowing how to develop is not enough. In the world of Agile development, time to market is key. The best way to speed time to market is to create quality applications and ship with quality code. AQuA is here to pass that knowledge out to the industry.
AT&T is a member of AQuA and we have worked alongside other mobile carriers, device manufacturers, and mobile platform providers and pooled our collective knowledge to generate a comprehensive list of mobile based requirements and best practices. The list does not cover every situation that will arise in the complex world of wireless, but it covers the basics that every developer should know.
AQuA has been around since 2004. It got its start as Java Verified, a certification program that tested application readiness for the wide array of Java ME based devices. It quickly became apparent that the test cases refined over the years did not just apply to Java, but would be beneficial to use across all mobile platforms.
AQuA does a great job of breaking down certification requirements and development principles into actionable items and test cases. Take a look at the Best Practice Guidelines for developing Quality Mobile Apps, Essentials of Mobile App Testing, and the Android Testing Criteria along with many more resources on the site.
In the coming weeks I will delve a little deeper into application quality and development practices such as those covered in AQuA. So please go ahead and join now.
