AT&T Mobile App Hackathon – Social Good (LA) RECAP!!!
Last weekend at Los Angeles City College in Los Angeles, CA we brought together over 103 participants who created 11 apps focused on creating social good. Their dedication in coding away during both May the Fourth and Cinco de Mayo was truly amazing to see. By the end of the event we had some truly great apps with stellar UI designs.

The most unique idea at the event came from Prudenza who created an app alerting drivers to areas that have a high density of children present. Their application allowed users to run it in the background so they could access additional audio and map applications often used while driving. When you entered an area such as a school zone, the app would provide audio notifications alerting you to the potential of children being present.
Another great idea was provided by Visit Dentist who created a storyboard and video app for Windows 8 that would assist parents in providing their children with instructions on what would happen when visiting their dentist. This was a throw back to our Autism Hackathon in Palo Alto on April 12th and 13th. Similar apps are used to assist children from the Autistic community in being prepared to visit the dentist and removing as much stress as possible.
Without further ado, here is a list of the teams that competed this last weekend:
Fact Generator – By using touchdevelop I was able to quickly create a Fact Generator.
Indeedy – 3rd Place Overall – Indeedy is a pay it forward app that allows you to discover good deeds people have done and record your own.
Prudenza – Best Idea – We wanted to develop an app that would possibly save lives especially kids lives. This application will provide the user with alert sounds when entering areas with a large density of children so that you can be more vigililant while driving.
iSpotHoles – 1st Place Overall – Pot hole reporter on iPhone for the city of Los Angeles. Yearly, the city repairs hundreds of thousands of potholes, and there is a issue with reporting by drivers and cyclists. There’s no easy and fast way.
Visit Dentist – 2nd Place Overall & 1st Place Windows 8 – It is very hard parents with non-verbal(Autism) to goto dentist. Have an app that would completely explain what is going to happen when they go to the dentist.
Office Hours – We wanted to create a platform that would make it easy to host virtual office hours.
Article Hop – Article hop provides audio updates of recent newsfeeds that you subscribe to. Think of an audio update version of Summ.ly
912 Alerts – An alert notification system for emergency situations. Our app allows you to provide loved ones with sms notifications when you run into an emergency. Instead of desperately looking through your contact list for family and friends, you can simply push a button and notify each person you deemed a key contact.
Life – A windows 8 metro app which helps people all across the United States find blood donors when in need. In other words a network of people in need of blood and people who wan’t to donate blood. Future endeavors include expansion to the play store and the ios app store.
Give and Get – Give away your items to those who wish to get them. Our app allows you to post items you wish to give away to remove the clutter from your home and then communicate anonymously with interested parties seeking to pick up the items.
