Enabling Technologies

This section contains key information on what AT&T has defined as enabling technologies—non-mobile technologies that are frequently required or recommended to optimize and differentiate mobile user experiences. As a thought leader in enabling technologies, AT&T continually endeavors to provide new and innovative services and technologies that offer the potential for differentiated, ever-richer mobile user experiences by empowering developers to create cutting-edge applications and services.

The first category of enabling technologies covers new or emerging mobile-usable technologies that we believe hold significant potential in the hands of our mobile developers. These currently include specific infrastructure technologies such as LTE, augmented reality and IP multimedia streaming as well as the rise of biometrics in consumer mobile applications (e.g., securing your device) and three-screen development tools which enable simultaneous development across mobile device, computer, and set-top box. Frequent advances in cloud processing are also expected to become mainstream, driving efficiencies, and creating new opportunities for developers and their customers.

The next category covered is referred to as primary enabling technologies. This section includes device-focused technologies such as mobile web fundamentals and location-based services. They are characterized as primary enablers because they are heavily and frequently relied upon by many developers. We also cover other technologies typically needed for mobile application development like securing communication channels, mobile middleware, available cloud technologies and other business-oriented concerns.

Also treated in this section are such common secondary technologies as Bluetooth and relevant elements Virtual Private Networking. While not mobile technologies per se, knowledge and detailed specifications are frequently needed by our mobile developers to realize their complete vision for a mobile experience.
